Pen drawing by Theodore Zimmerman, signed, stamped and inscribed.
Albert Giacometti Sculpture and paintings: Theo. Zimmerman visited Alberto Giacometti's studio on a number of occasions in 1953/54 when painting in Montparnasse, and completed drawings of Alberto and Annette during his time in Paris. Alberto made a drawing of Theo. sitting on a chair during one of his late 50's visits when Theo. also completed other pen drawings of Giacometti similar to the one shown above. In the 1960s Giacometti's health began to fail and in 1963 he underwent an operation for cancer of the stomach which was a success as the cancer did not return. In 1965 he became wery ill with heart disease and chronic bronchitis. Giacometti sadly died in June 1966 in Switzerland. Theo. said, quote: "Alberto Giacometti was truly one of the greatest artists of the 20th century." unquote.
Hans Hartung. (1904-1989) Expressionist painter. Theo. met Hans Hartung in the late 1950's when working in Paris and attended his studio on a regular basis and became very interested in the artists new methods of painting. Hartung had important exhibitions in Paris, Brussels and Germany and he was honoured with the 'Prix Guggenheim' in 1956 and awarded an honorary membership of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Also his awards included the Great International Prize for Painting at the Biennale in Venice in 1960. Hans Hartung's memoirs were published in 1976 and his fame became International.. One year later he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in 1981 was awarded the Oskar-Kokoschka-Prize of the Republic of Austria.
L. S. Lowry. R.A. (1887 - 1976) Theodore Zimmerman became an associate and friend of the artist in the 1950's until his death in 1976. They both were seen sketching in the Manchester, Salford and surrounding areas as well as occasionally travelling out to Lytham St. Annes, Blackpool and Fleetwood etc. Fine examples of his works of the mill workers of Lancashire can be viewed at 'The Lowry Centre' Manchester.
St. Ives, Cornwall. U.K.
At the artists colony in St. Ives, Theo. was aquainted with other well known painters during his many visits to the area in the 1950's - 1960's His works on the beaches and all along the coastal villages of Cornwall, were special places for Theo. to create beautiful drawings of lovely St. Ives, Newlyn, Mousehole and Polperro, etc. Theo's venture into Expressionism was shortlived in the early part of his career, but was revived when he started to paint his late 'Old & New Testament' story paintings with the use of various sized palette knifes.

Theodore Zimmerman. (A life of artistic study and painting.)
During a lifetime of study and painting, he would start early in the morning and continue until quite late in the evening, remaining oblivious to anything or anyone who wished to distract him from his work. Over the years, he was generous in giving paintings to close family and friends, and always passionately refusing to sell his works, saying to the public and art collectors, quote: "My paintings are a record of the places I have visited and of the cherished memories and experiences of my life as an artist. The love I have for my family, my paintings and the history of art, are the most important parts of my life and time as an artist on this wonderful and beautiful planet. To be true to yourself as an artist, do not concern yourself on how much your painting is worth or it's possible monetary value, concentrate on your work and only paint what you yourself want to paint and what is in your heart and mind. Any commercial value that collectors may place on my works during my lifetime or in the future is completely irrelevant". unquote.
Yorkshire paintings. Runswick Bay, Sandsend, Whitby and Staithes.
On the Yorkshire coast, Theo. stayed at a small cottage overlooking beautiful Runswick Bay where he painted 'en plein air' views from the beach and of the bay from high on the hill. In bad weather conditions when he was unable to go down to the beach to paint, he would spend hours looking at the sea and would sketch Runswick Bay from the cottage window. Days spent painting at Sandsend, Staithes and Whitby where Theo. completed works in pastels and occasionally in oils on canvas and board.
The late 'Old & New Testament' paintings.
Theo's. late atmospheric and colourful scenes of stories from the Bible, full of colour, poetry and mysticism, include 'The 'exodus' from Egypt'. 'The journeys of 'Moses' and the 'Israelites', including 'Moses and the 'Ten Commandments,' ' Mount Sinai,' 'The Israelites and the parting of the Red Sea,' The destruction of Herods army,' 'Moses and the Israelites at the promised land'. Other paintings are from the 'New Testament', include, 'The Crucifixion of Christ', 'The sermon on the mount', 'The raising of Lazarus', 'The feeding of the five thousand,' etc. The style and colour of these large beautiful works are some of Theo's finest creations.
Due to his very poor health following three heart attacks and a worsening heart condition in his later retirement years, Theo. ceased painting for quite a long period of time before starting to paint again on a very much reduced scale with his Bible Story series. Retired from painting for many years, he would only paint an occasional picture or drawing for a friend or family member who requested a special work. With Theo's reluctance and even refusal to sell his paintings, his works are relatively scarce. All his paintings are signed, inscribed, and bear the important provenance 'Atelier' stamp of the artist.
